In order to provide differentiation, the criteria describe the target at three levels, for example, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. This could simply be that at Basic level the student requires help, Intermediate the student is just competent and at Advanced level the student has fully mastered the skill. Alternatively, the levels may be mapped to National Curriculum levels. The exact way of doing this is left to the subject specialist. Competence in respect of the criteria can be assessed by direct observation, written work or simple tests. Moderation can be achieved by discussing assessed work which also provides a vehicle for staff development.
